How to Solve Sudoku Puzzles
- Scan rows, columns and boxes — find cells where only one digit is possible by eliminating what is already present.
- Use the singles technique first — naked singles (only one possibility in a cell) and hidden singles (a digit that can only go in one place within a row, column or box) solve most beginner puzzles entirely.
- Mark pencil candidates — for harder puzzles, write small candidate digits in each cell to track possibilities and spot patterns.
- Look for pairs and triples — two or three cells in a unit that share the same candidates allow you to eliminate those digits from other cells in that unit.
- Apply pointing pairs — if a digit in a box is restricted to one row or column, it can be eliminated from the rest of that row or column outside the box.
- For tough puzzles, try X-Wing and Swordfish patterns — these advanced techniques eliminate candidates across multiple rows and columns simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sudoku?
Sudoku is a logic-based number placement puzzle. The classic version uses a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 boxes. The goal is to fill every cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains all nine digits exactly once. No mathematics is required — only pure logical deduction.
Is Sudoku suitable for beginners and children?
Absolutely. Our Mini Sudoku collection features easy 6x6 puzzles that are perfect for children and complete beginners. The smaller grid uses only digits 1 to 6, making the logic much simpler while teaching the same core solving techniques as the full 9x9 puzzle.
What are Sudoku variants?
Sudoku variants add extra rules or constraints beyond the classic version to create fresh challenges. Popular variants include Killer Sudoku (cells must sum to given totals), Thermo Sudoku (digits must increase along thermometer shapes), Diagonal Sudoku (the main diagonals must also contain all nine digits), Consecutive Sudoku and many more. Explore our full Sudoku Variants collection to discover them all.
Does Sudoku require mathematical ability?
No. The digits 1 to 9 in Sudoku are used purely as symbols — you could replace them with letters or shapes and the puzzle would work identically. Sudoku is entirely about logical deduction, not arithmetic. This is one reason it is enjoyed equally by people who love mathematics and those who do not.
What is the difference between the difficulty levels?
Easy puzzles can be solved using only basic singles techniques and require no candidate tracking. Medium puzzles introduce pairs and pointing pairs. Hard and tough puzzles require advanced techniques such as X-Wing, Swordfish or complex candidate eliminations. Our Daily Sudoku collection features the toughest puzzles for experienced solvers.
Are solutions provided?
Most puzzles include a complete solution. Click the View Answer button on the puzzle page to reveal it. For some puzzles the solution walkthrough is provided in a linked YouTube video within the post.
