Tens Sudoku

A fascinating Sudoku variation where adjacent cells adding to 10 are marked with X

Tens Sudoku is a fascinating Sudoku variation, very similar to XV Sudoku. This puzzle was earlier known with a different name, Classic Sudoku with 10; however, it is more famous by the name Tens Sudoku. The rules of this Sudoku type are similar to XV Sudoku, with the difference that the V rule does not apply here. This means that all places where the sum of two adjacent numbers is 10 are marked with an X at the centre of these cells. Conversely, if there is no X given, then adjacent cells cannot add to 10. Rules of Tens Sudoku

Classic Sudoku Rules apply. Additionally, all adjacent cells containing numbers adding to ten are marked with X. It means that adjacent cells that are not marked must not contain numbers adding to ten.

Why Solve Tens Sudoku?

  • Enhances arithmetic reasoning by tracking sums of adjacent cells.
  • A converse rule Sudoku, similar to XV Sudoku, but focused only on sums of 10.
  • Known by multiple names: Tens Sudoku and Classic Sudoku with 10.
  • Features X marks for adjacent pairs summing to 10, with a simple and elegant rule.
  • Great for intermediate solvers looking to explore converse rule puzzles.
  • Builds logical deduction and arithmetic skills simultaneously.

Key Techniques for Solving Tens Sudoku

  1. Understand that the X marks each X indicates that the two adjacent cells sum to 10.
  2. Apply the converse rule if no X is present, adjacent cells cannot sum to 10.
  3. Identify complementary pairs of digits that sum to 10: (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), (4,6). Note that 5+5=10, but digits cannot repeat in a row, column, or box.
  4. Eliminate complementary pairs if a digit is placed, eliminate its 10-complement from adjacent cells without X marks.
  5. Apply standard Sudoku logic; always apply row, column, and box eliminations.
  6. Check your work, verify that all X-marked adjacent cells sum to 10, and all unmarked adjacent cells do not sum to 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tens Sudoku?

Tens Sudoku is a variation of Classic Sudoku where adjacent cells that sum to 10 are marked with an X. If no X is present, adjacent cells cannot sum to 10. It is very similar to XV Sudoku but without the V rule (which marks adjacent cells summing to 5).

What is the difference between Tens Sudoku and XV Sudoku?

In XV Sudoku, X marks adjacent cells summing to 10, and V marks adjacent cells summing to 5. In Tens Sudoku, only X marks are used for adjacent cells summing to 10, and the V rule does not apply. Tens Sudoku is essentially XV Sudoku with only the X rule.

What are the complementary pairs in Tens Sudoku?

The pairs of digits that sum to 10 are (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), and (4,6). Note that 5+5=10, but since digits cannot repeat in a row, column, or box, this pair is not possible in adjacent cells. These complementary pairs are key to solving Tens Sudoku puzzles.
