Battenburg Sudoku
A Sudoku variation inspired by the checkered pattern of Battenburg cake
Recently I have created an Excel program to draw Sudoku images for the Battenburg Sudoku type. After creating this program, I have created several puzzles of Battenburg Sudoku which I will be publishing soon. Battenburg Sudoku derives its name from the Battenburg cake, a light sponge cake with a checkered pattern. In Battenburg Sudoku, a checkered pattern is given whenever, in any 2×2 square, two odd numbers and two even numbers form the checkered pattern.
To solve Battenburg Sudoku puzzles, it is very important to keep track of cells which will contain even numbers and cells which will contain odd numbers. Once you are able to mark these cells correctly for even and odd numbers, the puzzle becomes easier to solve, similar to Even/Odd Sudoku.

Rules of Battenburg Sudoku
Classic Sudoku Rules apply. Additionally, whenever 2 odd and 2 even digits form a 2×2 checkerboard pattern, a Battenburg marking is given. That is, for any 2×2 cells, if two odd and two even numbers appear diagonally opposite to each other, then a Battenburg marking is provided.
Why Solve Battenburg Sudoku?
- Experience a unique checkerboard pattern logic inspired by Battenburg cake.
- Develop even/odd reasoning skills — tracking odd and even numbers is key to solving.
- Master the 2×2 checkerboard rule — learn to identify when odd and even digits form diagonal patterns.
- Improve visual pattern recognition — the Battenburg markings provide powerful visual clues.
- Perfect for experienced Sudoku solvers seeking a fresh challenge.
- A great entry point into Sudoku variants with parity-based constraints.
Key Techniques for Solving Battenburg Sudoku
- Identify the checkerboard pattern — a Battenburg marking means the 2×2 cells contain two odd and two even digits diagonally.
- Track odd and even cells — mark each cell as potentially odd or even. This is the most important step.
- Use standard Sudoku logic — always apply row, column, and box eliminations alongside the Battenburg rule.
- Look for unmarked 2×2 squares — if a Battenburg marking is not given, the 2×2 cells do NOT form the checkerboard pattern.
- Combine with Even/Odd Sudoku techniques — once you identify odd/even cells, the puzzle behaves like an Even/Odd Sudoku.
- Check your parity assignments — verify that every Battenburg marking satisfies the checkerboard condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Battenburg Sudoku?
Battenburg Sudoku is a variation of Classic Sudoku inspired by the Battenburg cake, which has a checkered pattern. In this puzzle, a Battenburg marking is given whenever, in any 2×2 square, two odd numbers and two even numbers form a diagonal checkerboard pattern. This adds a visual parity constraint to standard Sudoku logic.
How is Battenburg Sudoku different from Classic Sudoku?
In addition to standard Sudoku rules (each row, column, and box contains 1-9), Battenburg Sudoku adds the checkerboard pattern constraint. Whenever a 2×2 square contains two odd and two even digits diagonally, a Battenburg marking is given. If no marking is present, the 2×2 square does NOT form the checkerboard pattern.
What is the relationship between Battenburg Sudoku and Even/Odd Sudoku?
Once you have correctly identified which cells contain even numbers and which contain odd numbers, Battenburg Sudoku behaves similarly to Even/Odd Sudoku. The Battenburg markings provide clues about the parity (odd/even) of the digits, which then helps you solve the puzzle using standard Sudoku logic.
Do I need to be good at math to solve Battenburg Sudoku?
No — Battenburg Sudoku does not require any arithmetic. You only need to identify whether digits are odd or even (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are odd; 2, 4, 6, 8 are even). The challenge is purely logical, just like standard Sudoku.
