XV Sudoku - Master Converse Rule Sudoku with X & V Sums

XV Sudoku Variation Puzzles

XV Sudoku

A popular converse rule Sudoku where X marks sums of 10 and V marks sums of 5

XV Sudoku is one of the most popular converse rule Sudoku variations. Converse logic Sudoku puzzles are among my favourite Sudoku types, and XV Sudoku is the one I like the most, along with Consecutive Sudoku. To solve XV Sudoku, you must always remember the converse rule: wherever neither X nor V is given, the numbers in the orthogonal cells cannot have a sum of 10 or 5. This rule removes many possible number combinations and is essential for solving XV Sudoku puzzles. This collection includes standard XV Sudoku puzzles, Liar XV Sudoku, XV Trio Sudoku, Non-Consecutive XV Sudoku, Anti-Knight XV Sudoku, Jigsaw XV Sudoku, and XIVI Sudoku variations. This page contains links to all XV Sudoku puzzles and their variations published on this website.

Rules of XV Sudoku

Classic Sudoku Rules apply. Additionally, if an X is given between two adjacent cells, the digits in those cells sum to 10. If a V is given between two adjacent cells, the digits in those cells sum to 5. If an X or V is not given, the two digits cannot sum to 5 or 10.

Rules of 6x6 XV Sudoku

Mini Classic Sudoku Rules apply. Additionally, if an X is given between two adjacent cells, the digits in those cells sum to 10. If a V is given between two adjacent cells, the digits in those cells sum to 5. If an X or V is not given, the two digits cannot sum to 5 or 10.

Key Techniques for Solving XV Sudoku

  1. Understand the markings X means adjacent cells sum to 10, V means adjacent cells sum to 5.
  2. Apply the converse rule if no X or V is present, adjacent cells cannot sum to 5 or 10.
  3. Identify complementary pairs X pairs: (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), (4,6). V pairs: (1,4), (2,3).
  4. Eliminate complementary pairs if a digit is placed, eliminate its X or V complement from adjacent cells without the corresponding mark.
  5. Apply standard Sudoku logic; always apply row, column, and box eliminations.
  6. Check your work, verify that all X-marked cells sum to 10, all V-marked cells sum to 5, and all unmarked cells do not sum to 5 or 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is XV Sudoku?

XV Sudoku is a converse rule Sudoku variation where X marks between adjacent cells indicate a sum of 10, and V marks indicate a sum of 5. If no mark is present, adjacent cells cannot sum to 5 or 10. It is one of the most popular Sudoku variations featured in many international contests.

What are the complementary pairs in XV Sudoku?

X pairs (sum to 10): (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), (4,6). V pairs (sum to 5): (1,4), (2,3). Note that 5+5=10, but digits cannot repeat in a row, column, or box, so this pair is not possible in adjacent cells.

What is the converse rule in XV Sudoku?

The converse rule means that if an X or V is not given between adjacent cells, the two digits cannot sum to 5 or 10. This is the key to solving XV Sudoku puzzles and is essential for understanding other converse rule Sudoku variations.

What are the variations of XV Sudoku?

This collection includes several variations: Liar XV Sudoku (where one clue is false), XV Trio Sudoku (combined with Trio rules), Non-Consecutive XV Sudoku (no consecutive digits touch), Anti-Knight XV Sudoku (knight's move constraint), Jigsaw XV Sudoku (irregular regions), and XIVI Sudoku (a new variation with additional constraints). Each variation adds unique twists to the standard XV Sudoku rules.
